Complete Residential Remodel in Seattle, WA

An old brick house is transformed into an open, comfortable, warm and welcoming home.

  • Design By: Board & Vellum
  • Neighborhood: Magnolia

About this Project

The homeowners of this beautiful Magnolia home wanted a solution to their compartmentalized home. The central stairwell to the basement was fully enclosed and separated the kitchen from the dining room and hallway, making their home feel cramped and uncomfortable.

Partnering with Board & Vellum on the design, we relocated the basement stairway and opened up the walls, making the main level of the house feel spacious and cohesive.

Without altering the exterior or disrupting the existing brick facade, this whole house remodel effectively opened up our clients’ living space and added modern flair and function. From the living room to the breakfast nook, it was designed with plenty of room for these homeowners to gather and unwind in comfort, or entertain in style.

The new accordion-style folding glass doors in the dining area now overlook the stunning patio view and let in plenty of natural light. When fully open, the indoor living space fully bridges with the outdoors, blurring the lines between inside and out in a contemporary aesthetic of clean lines and simplicity.

In the primary bedroom, we framed in a new small, yet luxe bathroom by borrowing a few square feet from the bedroom. To compensate for the loss in square footage, we built in a new window seat, with two floor-to-ceiling wardrobe closets that flanked either side of the window allowing for ample storage.

The refinished basement was designed with a cozy family room fit for entertaining, a custom-built wet bar area, a new fireplace and a gorgeous mudroom with a wall of built-in cabinets, open shelving and bench seating.

The custom built-in features, consistent use of materials and color palette (e.g., quartz countertops, white subway tile, and soft gray hues) give this home a cohesive, well-designed look from top to bottom.
