The owners of this ‘70s-era home had visions of renovating their space with modern amenities, bright colors and custom features. Their house featured vaulted ceilings and expansive windows, but lacked a modern aesthetic that was more representative of the owners’ personality and design tastes.

After working closely with the design team at Board & Vellum, Damskov Construction assisted in transforming the look and feel of this home, starting with the replacement of a giant river rock fireplace that was positioned in the center of the home. The new modern fireplace feature became a beautiful focal point, enjoyed from both sides of the room, and allowed both the living and dining rooms to finally be experienced as one large open concept living area. Special care was taken to update the space with respect to the home’s existing exposed rough sawn beams and architecture.

Damskov Construction also removed the walls that enclosed the staircase down to the walkout basement, updating it with new metal railings. The open stairway has become an ideal place to display wall art, with the pantry storage relocated into built-in storage cabinets and a special niche area for capturing mail, etc.

In the basement, two formerly awkward spaces were redesigned with custom built-ins to help redefine the space—particularly a gorgeous wine room with a custom floor-to-ceiling contemporary wine wall; and an office area that converts into an extra guest room. A rarely-used wet bar was also converted into a functional hall bathroom designed for ease of use between siblings.

This ‘70s house is now full of bright, contemporary details, and fits the homeowners’ personality and design style perfectly. By opening up the stairway to directly connect the two floors, the new contemporary design elements are carried throughout the home and make the basement feel like an integral part of the entire living space.
